About Sandy Lake First Nation
Neh gaaw saga'igan is the local translation of Sandy Lake, where the people traditionally and continues to live off the abundance of land as hunters and gatherers. Though wild game is still a staple in the diets of many, today the people of Sandy Lake enjoy games and sports such as hockey, volleyball, softball, taekwondo, golf, and other modern sports.
Located 450 km northeast of Winnipeg and 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay, we are a remote, fly-in First Nation community located in the boreal forested area of Northwestern Ontario along the Severn River. Beautiful landscapes surround our community, giving our people the opportunity for outdoor and social activities all-year-round. In the summer, we go hunting, hiking, kayaking, and fishing. In the winter, we go ice fishing, play ice hockey, and marvel at the beautiful northern lights above our open skies. About the Opportunity
Sandy Lake Board of Education is looking for a full-time Human Resources Officer based in Sandy Lake, Ontario.
Reporting to the Executive Secretary and working closely with the Director of Education, you will play a pivotal role in leading the HR department, overseeing two HR clerks, and ensuring compliance with labour legislation, organizational policies, and community standards.
In this position, you will be primarily responsible for managing the full scope of human resources operations, including recruitment, employee relations, policy enforcement, performance management, and workplace investigations, while also mentoring and training a local successor to build long-term HR capacity within the community.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading the HR department and supervising HR clerks
- Overseeing recruitment, onboarding, and contract administration
- Updating and enforcing HR policies and ensuring compliance with the Canada Labour Code and local bylaws
- Advising managers on employee relations, performance, discipline, and workplace conflict resolution
- Conducting and supporting workplace investigations, terminations, and grievance processes
- Coordinating training, orientation, and staff development initiatives
- Maintaining accurate HR records, files, and documentation
- Supporting health and safety compliance across all education staff

About You
To qualify, you will need a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in Human Resources (or a related field), along with 3–5+ years of progressive HR management or employee relations experience and demonstrated supervisory skills.
The following are required:
- Ability to undergo a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Strong knowledge of the Canada Labour Code, employment legislation, and organizational policy compliance
- Proven ability to conduct investigations, manage discipline, and oversee grievance processes
- Experience developing, updating, and enforcing HR policies and procedures
- Proficiency in recruitment, onboarding, and contract administration
- Ability to design and deliver staff training and orientation programs
- Experience supervising and mentoring staff, with a focus on succession planning
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to resolve workplace conflicts
- High attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and record keeping

You will be resilient under pressure, able to balance the “black-and-white” nature of policy with cultural sensitivity and humanity, and demonstrate the confidence to guide managers in making sound HR decisions.

Sandy Lake is looking for a strong, culturally aware HR leader who can bring stability, fairness, and professionalism to the department while understanding the unique needs of a First Nations community.
